   Curious about why pipes burst? Here's how to detect and fix leaks. Introduction Pipe bursts are often caused by too-cold temperatures. When water freezes, it expands and puts pressure on the pipe. It can cause the pipe to break or leak, burst pipe, and water pipe repair . There are a few things you can do to prevent your pipes from freezing: Keep your thermostat at a consistent temperature.  Open cabinet doors to let heat reach pipes that run through unheated areas, like cabinets.  Disconnect outdoor hoses and drain them.  Apply heat tape or pipe insulation to exposed pipes.  If your pipes freeze, don't try to thaw them with a blow torch or other open flame that could cause a fire. Instead, thaw them gradually with hot water. You can also use a hair dryer, electric heating pad, or space heater.
